Arataki Visitor Center
Waitakere's Knowledge Trove
Only about 5 minutes drive from Miharo B&B, nestled in the rain forest, the Arataki Visitor Center is the starting point of your Waitakere adventure.
Standing proudly in front of the building is the "Pou" (or Pouwhenua: carved wooden posts to mark land boundaries or significance) representing the ancestors of the iwi of the Waitakere Ranges, Te Kawerau a Maki.
The views from the centre are breath-taking, sweeping down the sub-tropical rain forest, Huia Reservoir/dams, to Manukau harbour and beyond.
Visitor center staff are pleased to introduce you to the local scenery. They can also help to choose the best walking/hiking trails and attractions based on your physical capability and offer a useful itinerary. Free maps are available on request. (Open tracks and map can also be downloaded using this link)
There are permanent displays of the Waitakere's nature, history, and culture. The visitor centre also has rotating exhibitions showcasing local artists. Don't miss the excellent 12min film on Waitakere ranges screened in the lower floor theatre.
